Abstract:Potential favorite urban places may be the little park at the next corner, the shopping center at breakfast time, the neighborhoods playground, or the cafe at the lake in the evening. Data of a paper-pencil-questionnaire about favorite urban places and their capacities to satisfy environment related needs filled out by a socially diverse sample of N= 105 participants living in Berlin was conducted. Different question formats were used. The resulting favorite places could be divided in two main categories natural (green and blue spaces) and built-up gray (out- and in-door) spaces. There is a slight difference between natural (green and blue) and built-up gray (out- and in-door) spaces in terms of visiting and utilization. Though these kinds of places show different features (more natural – more artificial) they seem to have a high potential to provide a supporting environment mainly for basic consummation, relaxing and sportive purposes, and may establish multiple options to fulfill basic environment related human needs or personal wishes. Natural green and blue favorite urban places bare the capacity to satisfy needs for motion & mobility, repose & regeneration, and health significantly better than the gray built-up favorite places (out- and in-door). However, in all other aspects of satisfaction the built-up are as satisfying as the natural spaces.
